Founded in 1896, the Big “I" is a federation that includes the national trade association and 51 independent state associations, each led by an executive, staff and a volunteer agent leadership team. Many states also have local chapters. When an agency is part of a state association, it also becomes a member of Big “I" national and the Trusted Choice® brand. Together, we support nearly 25,000 independent agency locations nationwide. The Big “I" also has an international agent and broker members.
The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America, Inc., also known as the Big “I"® or IIABA® is a national trade association that strives to provide independent insurance agents and brokers with a sustainable competitive advantage in the insurance marketplace by equipping members with tools and resources, and advocacy and support, to maintain excellence in business and customer service.
Independent agents represent multiple insurance carriers and offer choice, customization, and advocacy to their customers. Big “I" members offer consumers all types of insurance—property, casualty, life, health, employee benefit plans, and retirement products.
The Big “I" provides resources, advocacy, and support to help members build and grow their business. Member agencies have access to exclusive products, services and education created for independent agents, by independent agents and our partners.
Trusted Choice® is the brand of independent insurance agents, created by our national association. It’s not a market-access program, and it’s much more than just advertising and public relations resources, although Trusted Choice® include both. Branding is your identity and relationship with the consumer. Trusted Choice® is not meant to replace your agency’s unique identity, but instead supplement it with the message of why consumers should choose an independent agent in the first place: Choice, Customization and Advocacy.
In fact, retaining your agency’s identity and everything that makes it special is the point. Seeing the Trusted Choice® logo associated with a diverse group of professionals only reinforces its message. We’re independent. We aren’t tied down to one policy or one provider’s rates. We aren’t required to serve the consumers that a corporate office in Washington, D.C. decided upon from hundreds of miles away. The only thing that we are required to do is to uphold the standards of service stated in the Pledge of Performance. The rest is up to us to do as we see fit.
